Instructional Sailing Videos

Please see below some instructional sailing videos made by Australian Sailing.  These have been provided to support sailors who have completed a course with EYC and are continuing to use club boats to improve their skills.

EYC recommends every sailor to do further research on skills they want to improve on in addition to the below.

*Please always make sure you go sailing in wind and weather conditions suitable for your age and skill level.  Always inform someone who is on shore, where you will be and the time you are due back.

Rigging

Tacking

Gybing

EYC encourages all sailors to be independant and have provided the below instructions as guidelines on how to rig club boats.  If in doubt, please ask someone to check your rigging before proceeding out onto the water.

At the end of your sailing session, please wash, return all equipment to the shed and store correctly. Anything that requires fixing, please note in the maintenance log.

Rigging an EYC Tackers Boat

  1. Find a trailer, put boat on it, collect a sail rig, centreboard and rudder.
  2. Check the boat has a yellow tow rope, bailer and paddle attached.
  3. Take gear to the beach (watch for vehicles, animals and others)
  4. Check the bung is in the boat (inside at the back)
  5. Remove boat from trailer, store trailer above high tide mark.
  6. Point bow of the boat facing into the wind.
  7. Set up the sail (if strong winds you can leave sprit off to reduce sail size - pole that goes diagonally across main sail) and put it onto the boat
  8. Make sure sail is secured to the boat with half hitches
  9. Check the main sheet (rope that controls the sail) isn't tangled or twisted.
  10. Check all sheets have figure of 8 knot at the end.
  11. Push the trailer into the water (rudder and centreboard inside)
  12. With someone holding the bow of the boat into the wind, attach the rudder and put the centreboard in.  Attach the mainsail to the boom.
  13. Sail away!

Rigging an EYC Laser Dinghy (4.7 sail)

*You may need to find someone to assist you initially when finding all required parts and setting up.

  • Find a trailer (check wheels & tyres), put a laser on it, make sure you have all parts of the mast and boom.
  • Find a 4.7 sail (orange tips), a rudder and centreboard.
  • Walk the boat on the trailer down to the beach.  Face the bow of the boat into the wind on the trailer to rig.
  • Check both bungs are in (1 x rubber inside the boat at the back and one outside at the back - screw in).
  • Connect top and bottom part of mast.  Feed the sail onto the mast from the top.
  • Raise the mast and slot it into the hole.
  • Connect the boom to the mast.
  • Connect the sail to the boom.
  • Connect the outhaul first, then the vang and finally the down haul.
  • Check the main sheet (rope for sail) isn't twisted and is connected correctly.
  • Connect the rudder ensuring pin is in place (making sure the tiller goes under the traveller rope).
  • Secure the rudder in the raised position for launching.
  • Hook centreboard on and put in place ready to drop when trailer is removed *check it's the right way round
  • Put boat into the water, facing into the wind, remove trailer and store above high tide line.
  • Do a final check or ask someone to check prior to heading out on the water.  Enjoy!
